492nd SOW

The 492nd Special Operations Wing is a primary support unit of the Air Force Special Operations Command, the Air Force Component of the U.S. Special Operations Command.

The 492nd SOW is responsible for the training of Air Force special operations forces as well as AFSOC's non-standard aviation program in support of Air Force Special Operations Forces throughout the world.

The 492nd SOW operates under the Total Force Integration (TFI) concept as the wing brings together the strengths of the active duty Air Force, the Air Force Reserve, the Air National Guard, Department of Defense civilians, and contract personnel to form an integrated training team dedicated to building new Air Commandos.

  • 524th Special Operations Squadron, Duke Field, FL
  • 19th Special Operations Squadron, Hurlburt Field, FL
  • 492nd Special Operations Training Support Squadron, Hurlburt Field, FL
  • 492nd Special Operations Training Group / Air Commando Development Center (Provisional), Hurlburt Field, FL
    • 371st Special Operations Combat Training Squadron, Hurlburt Field, FL
    • U.S. Air Force Special Operations School, Hurlburt Field, FL


The 492nd SOW operates under the Total Force Integration (TFI) concept as strengths of the active duty Air Force, the Air Force Reserve (AFR), Department of Defense civilians and contract personnel form an integrated training and education team dedicated to building new Air Commandos. The following AFR units operate under the TFI concept with the 492nd SOW:

  • 5th Special Operations Squadron, an AFR unit from the 919th Special Operations Wing, Duke Field, FL
  • 711th Special Operations Squadron, an AFR unit from the 919th Special Operations Wing, Duke Field, FL
  • 859th Special Operations Squadron, an AFR unit from the 919th Special Operations Wing, Duke Field, FL
  • 919th Special Operations Maintenance Group, an AFR unit from the 919th Special Operations Wing, Duke Field, FL

The 492nd SOW provides mission qualification training in SOF aviation platforms to include AC-130J, U-28, C-146 as well as small unmanned aerial systems, medical element personnel, and AFSOC Security Forces. In addition to AFSOC personnel, the wing is responsible for educating and training other USSOCOM components and joint/interagency/coalition partners.
